Islamic education in the archipelago plays a strategic role in shaping social character through spiritual and intellectual values. Using a descriptive-explorative qualitative method and library research, this study analyzes various data from books, journals, and historical documents. The results show that Islamic education developed gradually, starting from simple methods in mosques and prayer rooms (surau) to the birth of institutionalized entities such as pesantren and madrasah. The modernization of Islamic education became massive in the early 20th century as a response to the Dutch colonial education system and reform movements from the Middle East. This process was carried out by integrating traditional classical systems with modern formal schooling. In conclusion, Islamic education in Indonesia has successfully adapted to the dynamics of time through an inclusive cultural approach, enabling it to produce generations with both spiritual depth and broad intellectual insight.

2026-08-01T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2026 Farhatul Maula Dzunnuroini, Lutfiah Kurdiana Putri, Ahmad Affandy, M. The process of Islamization, which took place through trade, marriage, the preaching of Islamic scholars, and the development of Islamic kingdoms, gave birth to centers of civilization such as Aceh, Demak, Banten, and Ternate. This research uses a literature study method by examining scientific articles indexed by Google Scholar on the history of Islam and Islamic education in the Indonesian archipelago. The results show that the development of Islamic education before independence was realized through traditional institutions such as Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), surau (surau), dayah (dayah), and langgar (prayer houses), which functioned as centers for the transmission of Islamic knowledge, moral development, and the development of clerics and community leaders. Furthermore, Islamic educational institutions served as a means of cultural resistance against colonialism and a medium for the formation of the community's identity. In the early 20th century, Islamic education underwent renewal through the madrasah system, which began to integrate religious and general knowledge. Thus, Islamic civilization in the pre-independence Indonesian archipelago not only left a religious and cultural legacy but also laid an important foundation for the development of national education in Indonesia
2026-08-01T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2026 Salma Salsabila, Zahro Julia Agustin, Dianatus Sa’baniyah, Anang Sholikhuddinhttps://e-journalbarokahpublisher.com/index.php/AJPKI/article/view/380PERADABAN ISLAM DI NUSANTARA MASA PENJAJAHAN DAN PERKEMBANGAN PENDIDIKANNYA2026-06-16T21:26:25+07:00Novi Artikaartikanovi1706@gmail.comDwi Setyanitasetyad837@gmail.comAnang Sholikhuddinanangsholikhudin@yudharta.ac.id
This research aims to analyze the dynamics of Islamic civilization in the Indonesian Archipelago (Nusantara) during the colonial era and how Islamic education evolved as a response to colonialism. Using a qualitative historical method, the study finds that while colonialism disrupted Islamic political structures, it simultaneously triggered intellectual resistance. The people of the Archipelago in the pre-Islamic period adhered to animism and dynamism belief systems, later overlaid by Hindu-Buddhist influences that came afterward. This article aims to describe the characteristics of pre-Islamic religion and culture in the Archipelago, including belief systems, ritual practices, social structure, politics, education, literature, and architecture. Using a library research method with a historical approach, this study finds that pre-Islamic religion in the Archipelago has distinctive features such as belief in ancestral spirits, worship practices at sacred sites, a caste system (Hindu influence), and terraced shrines (punden berundak) as the forerunner of temple architecture. This research examines core issues such as the cultural adaptation of Islam through local arts, architecture (e.g., Demak Mosque), and syncretic practices, alongside the political characteristics including non-violent power transitions, alliances with local rulers, and establishment of the Demak Sultanate as Islam's first political stronghold. The objective is to analyze how the Nine Saints fostered Islamic civilization while navigating political dynamics like indirect influence via royal courts and moral authority rather than conquest. Employing a historical-philosophical approach with qualitative analysis of primary sources (chronicles like Babad Tanah Jawi) and secondary literature, the study reveals key findings: the Wali Songo's tolerant, adaptive politics—characterized by cultural diplomacy, heir cultivation (e.g., Sunan Gunung Jati's statecraft), and Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah doctrine—ensured Islam's enduring dominance, transforming Nusantara into a hub of Islamic pluralism by the 16th century.
2026-08-03T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2026 Tasya Nzwa Umrotul Khasanah, Risa Majidahhttps://e-journalbarokahpublisher.com/index.php/AJPKI/article/view/431NEGOSIASI PENDIDIKAN ISLAM DAN NEGARA PADA MASA ORDE LAMA KAJIAN HISTORIS MADRASAH DAN PESANTREN2026-07-07T10:39:05+07:00Abdur Rohmanaababdrohman@gmail.comShodrus Syahidsodrussyahid555@gmail.comM. Employing a historical approach through library research, this study analyzes how government policies toward Islamic education were formulated and how madrasah and pesantren responded through institutional adaptation. The concept of "educational negotiation" is used as an analytical tool to examine the reciprocal relationship between the state's interest in building a national education system and the Muslim community's aspiration to preserve religious education. The findings reveal that the relationship between the state and Islamic educational institutions was not subordinative but negotiative, resulting in the formal recognition of madrasah and the modernization of pesantren as the foundation of Islamic education in Indonesia.
2026-08-03T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2026 Abdur Rohman, Shodrus Syahid, M. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of three variables (Islamic civilization, education system, and long-term impact) into a holistic analytical framework, which has not been systematically conducted by previous studies. The method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach through library research, analyzing 20 literatures consisting of 12 accredited journal articles, 6 scientific books, and 2 historical documents. The results show that: Islamic civilization in the Walisongo era developed through cultural acculturation by utilizing arts (wayang, gamelan, tembang) and local traditions as effective da'wah media. Walisongo played an important role in developing pesantren, mosques, and surau as centers for religious learning and character building. The education system developed was flexible, contextual, gradual, and aligned with local wisdom. The conclusion is that Islamic civilization in the Walisongo era not only influenced religious aspects but also became a major foundation for Islamic education in Indonesia today. The practical implication is that the Walisongo-style local culture-based education model can serve as a reference for developing moderate Islamic education in the contemporary era.
2026-08-17T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2026 Milla Nuronia, Wilda Imroatul Amalia, Roi Masduki, Anang Sholikhuddin
